Introduction |
You're in the middle of a meeting at work, but your mind keeps drifting to the discussion you had with your partner last night ... and the kids you have to pick up at school on the way home ... and you wish you hadn't skipped lunch because the rumbling in your stomach is driving you nuts. Then, suddenly, you're back in the meeting, hoping to catch up with the discussion that has been going on while “you were gone”. Your heart starts pounding, hoping nobody noticed your "absence of mind".
Your brain is always on the go. Your nervous system is the control and communication system of the body. Its job is to send and receive messages. It controls your thoughts, feelings and a gazillion of other body processes. The brain is the main information and command center. It is made of billions of neurons. It helps the body respond to the information it receives from the senses. It handles movements, those you have control over and those you are not even aware of, like the muscle movements of your inner organs. The brain is quite a multi-tasker. Together with the spinal cord and the peripheral nerves it makes up a complex control and information-processing system. Age, stress, injury and neurological disorders can impact and hinder its functionality. |
